Finding His Calling: Neil’s Unconventional Journey from Culinary School to RV Technician

It is often said that career paths are rarely straight lines. For Neil, the journey to finding his true passion didn't start in a garage or on a dealership floor. It started in a commercial kitchen.

If you had told him two decades ago that he would eventually run a recreation vehicle repair business, he might have laughed. At the time, he was in college studying culinary arts, baking, and hospitality, with his sights set on becoming a Red Seal chef.

Yet today, as the founder of Neil’s RV, Neil spends his days helping families stay safe on the road. His story is a reminder that sometimes, finding the right career simply requires a willingness to try something new, along with the right people to help you along the way.

Growing up in Pembroke, Ontario, Neil was always fascinated by how things fit together. His father, a master electrician, often brought Neil along on electrical side jobs. Between helping his dad and working with local contractors building decks and fences, Neil developed a strong hands-on mechanical aptitude early on.

However, after high school, he decided to follow a creative spark into culinary school. Upon graduating, Neil moved west to Alberta to break into the restaurant scene. But when he saw the wage disparity between starting culinary positions and the booming oilfield industry, he pivoted into oil and gas.

Over the next few years, Neil drove trucks, operated heavy machinery, and lived in camp shacks on drilling rig sites for 30 days at a time. He enjoyed the work, but his natural curiosity kept him searching for a trade that would challenge him every day.

That turning point came when a close friend working as a service writer suggested Neil apply for an open position as an RV technician. Having never owned an RV himself, Neil stepped into the shop as a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) technician with no clear expectations, just a desire to learn.

For a year and a half, Neil systematically inspected RVs, learning the intricate electrical, plumbing, structural, and mechanical systems that make up these homes on wheels. Recognizing his dedication, the dealership transitioned him to retail repairs and sponsored his formal apprenticeship.

Under the guidance of dedicated instructors at SAIT, alongside seasoned shop journeymen Bernie and Cliff Wiebe, Neil mastered the trade and achieved his Red Seal Journeyman Certification.

For the first time in his career, everything clicked. He hadn't just found a new job; he had found a career that challenged him and gave him a sense of purpose.

After earning his Red Seal, Neil spent a decade honing his craft at local dealerships while taking on mobile repair jobs on evenings and weekends.

Then came a pivotal moment in 2019. Neil completed a service call for a local trailer owner who was so impressed by his craftsmanship and approach to the work that he called him back a few days later for another minor repair. After seeing Neil’s dedication in action a second time, the customer asked a question that would change Neil’s life:

“What do you think about starting Neil's RV?”

After weighing the decision with his wife, they decided to take the leap into business ownership.

Seven years later, Neil’s RV has grown from a single mobile service vehicle into an established local business. The same focus on quality work and customer care that shaped Neil’s own career has remained an important part of the business as it has grown.

For Neil, building a business has also meant creating a workplace where people can learn, develop their skills, and take pride in the work they do.

What began as an unexpected shift into the trades has evolved into a career and business that Neil never could have mapped out when he first enrolled in culinary school.

And perhaps that is the most valuable lesson in his story: a career path doesn't always have to make sense from the beginning. Sometimes, the right opportunity appears because you're willing to step through the door and learn what comes next.
